Chapter 15

Zoe closed her eyes briefly, enjoying the way Madison’s fingers encircled her wrist. She wanted Madison to pull her even closer, to finally give her that long-awaited kiss. Of the two of them, Madison was the only one who cared about her public image or her mother finding out about their friendship. Zoe didn’t give a damn about any of that.

She could always be the one to take the initiative, to pull Madison to her for a reassuring hug. To turn it into a kiss that might just unleash every drop of longing pent up in them both.

Instead, though, Zoe looked at her and said, “I’m sorry you’re not happy.”

“Don’t be sorry. It’s my own fault. I let it happen to me.” Madison’s face was so close to hers, looking down with teary eyes, that Zoe just wanted to soothe her misery. The last person she’d expected to care about was Madison Brinkley. How someone went from foe to friend, she didn’t know. But she did know she wanted to reach up and caress that sad, beautiful face.

“Okay,” Madison said. “I’m okay.” She sounded like she was trying to convince herself more than Zoe.

Zoe nodded. They were talking in circles at this point. Nothing productive was going to come of it unless one of them took action. She wanted to do something more than just talk, but she knew she had to respect Madison’s circumstances. “I guess we should probably get going.”

“Yeah. I’ll text you.” Madison finally dropped her hand and opened the door for Zoe. They went their separate ways and Zoe sat in her car, wondering if she’d just done something wrong. She hated that she didn’t want to lose Madison as a friend. Not now, not when they’d confessed their attraction and Madison had shared so much about herself.

When she arrived at home, her brother was there, looking weary as he rested on the recliner in the living room. “Hey skaterina,” he said when she walked in.

“Hey,” she answered and dug her hands into her pockets to make sure she had her phone, wallet, and keys. “What are you doing here?”

“Oh, the parents wanted to talk to me, probably about getting a job they can be proud of me doing.”

Zoe sank onto the sofa and nodded. “I guess it could be worse. Our parents could be like Madison Brinkley’s mother.”

“Madison – that hot blonde skater?” J.D. gestured, miming long, flowing hair.

“That’d be her.”

“Didn’t you tell me she’s some kind of horror show?”

“Her mother is. Madison isn’t so bad, I guess.” Zoe leaned forward, resting her hands on her knees. “At least if you tell Ma and Pa you actually love what you do, they’ll back off, I think. They just need to know you’re happy. That’s what makes them so cool. All they want is for us to do something that fulfills us. I think they’re concerned that construction is ‘just a job,’ not something you care about doing.”

J.D. nodded. “Well, I like it, so I hope you’re right.
